From the conditions in which all of our products are made to the ingredients used to make them to the packaging and reusable options, we research, test and search for the most effective and least harmful products for our customers and the planet.
The lifeblood of our business is in the relationships we develop, and the belief that we are adding a positive effect to the lives of everyone we engage - this includes our customers, our suppliers, even the very people that create our products from all over the world.
We support the use of local businesses, farmers and products at all times. We engage socially responsible initiatives and technologies that foster stewardship of the land, protect the environment and allow us to leave a smaller overall footprint. To this end, we pledge to offset our business footprint (warehousing, trucks, kiosks, etc.) by purchasing annual energy credits and employing energy saving technologies when possible.
The actions we take today as a responsible and world-community minded business are informed and influenced by our commitment to look ahead, continually grow, and effect productive change within ourselves, our company and the world in which we live.
Eco MV and the Bio Store are located on the island of Martha's Vineyard, seven miles off the shore of Cape Cod in Massachusetts.

Plastimcs & Packaging
Eco MV provides our community with alternatives to every day plastics. We're the first local company to offer a family of commercially available low carbon-footprint packaging derived from 100 percent annually renewable resources with cost and performance that competes with oil-based packaging materials and fibers. It starts with an abundant, natural resource such as field corn, which can easily and efficiently be reproduced each year.
We can easily help you change your packaging from plastic to a more natural and eco-friendly packaging product. We make it affordable and convenient with monthly scheduled deliveries and a local warehouse. On Martha's Vineyard, this transformation has helped create a destination that is different from all others, and one that really knows the meaning of "community."
Community
Engaging in the community in which the store(s) are located whenever possible, we have a genuine commitment to incorporating local goods and talent to stimulating the local economy.
In collaboration with community partners, we created a green, rooftop garden that functions as a research and demonstration space, providing a hands-on educational, agricultural learning experience for all visitors. The creation of this garden transforms the traditional ways we utilize our physical building space and interact with our environment.
We anticipate the roof will prove itself to be a great space for many years of intergenerational community events and will add a new dimension to the agricultural legacy of Martha's Vineyard. The roof can and will be replicated in any other community in which Eco MV has a presence.

Our Water
Did you know that most bottled water is transferred from the source in big transport tanks? So much for pure. And how about those plastic bottles? Did you know that the amount of oil it takes to produce one bottle could fill one bottle?

The icebox technology features a patented "Press Tap Valve" system that's leak proof and airtight - preventing bacterial contamination and airborne contaminants and maintaining freshness for Glacia's pure Norwegian arctic spring water, rich in naturally occurring electrolytes and nourishment.

Solutions
The current state of our planet The planet's natural ecosystems and regenerating bio-capacity are being severely degraded and, as a result, this compromises the ability of the planet to sustain life. Forests, fisheries, oceans, rangeland, fresh water systems (lakes, wetlands, rivers) and other natural ecosystems are all threatened while many are on the verge of collapse. Water, land and air are getting increasingly polluted, water tables are falling, soil erosion is leading to desertification, global warming is well underway, and species are dying out 1000 times faster than their natural rate of extinction.
- The world has already lost 80% of its original forests.
- At the world's current rates, 5-10% of tropical forest species will become extinct every decade.
- 75% of all the fish stocks in the world are already either: exploited, over-exploited or recovering. 27% of coral reefs have already been and 70% of Earth's coral reefs will cease to exist within the next forty years. The world has lost half of its coastal wetlands, including mangrove swamps and salt marshes.
- One-fifth of all species alive today will become extinct. 23% of all mammals and 12% of all birds' species were considered "threatened" in 2003.
How we can all help our Earth
To live means to consume; and consume we do. 24 hours a day, we consume air for breathing, water to drink and food to eat. In addition to these basic essentials, we consume ever increasing amount of goods - cars, houses, appliances, computers, furniture, books, travel and entertainment.
Everything we consume comes from the natural world - it is extracted, mined, farmed, grown, fished, cut down - and the resources on this planet are limited. By making changes in the way you consume, you can help our planet.
Consumption
- Consume less, desire less, want less - consumption directly impacts the planet's environment (everything we consume comes from the resources on this planet), and uses up precious resources needed for basic necessities of food, water, housing, health, sanitation etc., for billions of people on this planet.
- Simplify your life, spend more time on creating quality of life rather then material wealth.
- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Compost. Reduce your consumption, reuse what you can and recycle what you can't.
- Redefine your economic outlook to value social and environmental costs in every day decisions and make your consumer choices based on the actual social and environmental costs of the goods you buy.
- Support locally owned businesses and services .
Food
- Buy locally grown, seasonal and organic produce. Most of the food grown now is grown by in big industrial farms using intensive inputs of pesticides, fertilizers and energy without consideration for the land, air, water & the environment. Land, water and air are getting increasingly polluted & poisoned. Industrial food also travels an average of 1500 miles to make it to your plate, using up fossil fuels, resources and polluting the environment.
- Support local farmers. Buy from farmers markets and/or join a CSA - Community Supported Agriculture - where you get a box of locally grown, fresh organic produce delivered to you every week.
- Buy fair trade coffee, tea, chocolate, bananas - fair trade ensures that farmers producing the commodities are paid fair wages for their work.
- Do not eat shrimp. Shrimp are caught using bottom-trawling, which devastates the ocean floors, stripping them clear, like a forest clear-cut.
Other Products
- Buy products, which are manufactured sustainably - with respect to the environment and the people producing it.
- Buy organic clothing - cotton has the most pesticide use of any crop.
- Buy sweat-free and fair-trade products - products made by giving fair wages to workers. Most of the products we buy today are made in sweat-shop and in inhuman working conditions, by big corporations without regards to the environmental and labor laws.
- Buy 100% recycled, chlorine free copy paper & toilet paper - saves trees and creates a demand for recycled paper.
- Buy wood products, furniture, etc., which is FSC certified. FSC certification ensures that the wood comes from sustainable forestry practices.
Money
- Use local credit unions and community banks instead of big international banks. Local banks support and fund local community projects and businesses, keeping money within the community.
Community
- Make time for your own interests and the people you cherish. This may mean working less, or even changing professions. When supporting your life overtakes life itself, what good is the money you make?
- Volunteer/support non-profit organizations, community groups working on social, political, environmental, peace and justice issues.
- Create community any way you can by bartering or creating service exchange, tool exchange, goods exchange, etc. within your community and neighborhood.
- Live simply - leaving the cycle of stress, overwork, debt and exhaustion can free up time better spent pursuing hobbies and relationships with family, friends, and the greater community.
Partnerships
Community is at its best when the individual parts fit together, lift each other up and place the welfare of everyone along with their own. A year and a half into the Eco MV phase of my life and I find myself in a conundrum of my own invention. How does a well meaning person like myserlf find that line between commerce and character. I refer to the line where a business must be a business to succeed and the very dreams that brought it into existence. Who defines for the dreamer that line that denotes a ball that hits the court just outside the boundry line?
We Eco massochists are faced with it every day.
Its those temptations to compromise yourself for a short6cut to your goals--a cheaper product, a partial green item--that one item that will solve all your fears about "making it". You know, the one that everyone quietly advises you to embrace along with their empty encouraging phrases repeated over and over for saturated influence. And at times, especially after a 48 hour run on sleep it may even sound tempting. Maybe.
But not usually. Its hard ffor many to believe that I believe--really believe, in the goal of doing it better, more openly, more honestly and that that goal is as real and as important as Wall Streets goal for richess. With a wink most will agree and not heads frantically to "play along" but not really understand how it feels to really, really put it all on the line for a dream. Most will never feel that complete moment when the last 1% of faith, that between 99-100% that lifts you up off the ground and carries a man forward fueld only by uncompromised goals and unshakable character.
We entrepreneurs dodge bullet after bullet as thousands wiz by in acrobatic moves and come out unscathed to amzed eyes. We do whats impossible-fueld only by an unbroken belief in ourselves and our goals and our refusal to compromise the idea to do it for the future, for the people, for the animals, but never for money or fame. My riches iare the moments where I escape certain death having never even felt the danger. My riches feel forever and ever.
And in the end is it even important who knows. Not really. Those who need to get it and those who dont cant be blamed. You have to know what unshakable dreams and goals feel like foirst to ever understand their description.
